Historic District Minutes 05/10/07
DRAFT
Historic District Commission
Special Meeting Minutes
May 10, 2007

Members attending:  Fitzwilliam, Guild, McHugh and Walling. Luddy arrived at 4:20.
CTO: 4:05 PM.

Alan Cates application to replace garage doors on property located at 146 NH Route 119W, Map 31, Lot 05, Residential and Historic Districts.

Mr. Cates plans to replace the existing wood doors on the detached garage, which are rotten, with steel garage doors.  The new doors will look like the original doors with raised panels.  One will be an automatic door.

Fitzwilliam said there was a precedent for the use of steel doors on this property since the door on the attached garage was replaced with a steel door several years ago.  He added that steel makes sense in this case because wood doors wick up moisture and rot easily.  He said a garage is a modern day concession to the automobile.  It’s not a historic structure per se.

Fitzwilliam recommended painting the doors like the house trim to further blend the doors with the historic home, rather than leaving the baked finish unpainted.

Guild moved, McHugh seconded and the Commission approved the application to replace two wood garage doors with two steel garage doors, one of which is automatic.

Minutes:  Fitzwilliam moved, Guild seconded and the Commission voted to approve the May 1, 2007 special meeting minutes as written.

Emily Paulus, Preservation Planner with the NH Division of Historical Resources, will attend the next meeting on June 14, 2007 to discuss proposed design guidelines with the Commission (at 4PM) and make a presentation on historic districts to the public (at 5PM).

The Commission reviewed the ten myths about historic districts and continued to discuss the design guidelines.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 PM.
