Historic District Minutes 09/30/07
APPROVED
Historic District Commission
September 13, 2007

Members attending:  John Fitzwilliam, Lottie Guild, Brian Luddy, Eileen McHugh, Reuel Walling and Carmen Yon, Selectmen’s representative.
CTO: 4 PM

Historical Society application, presented by Bill Davis, to add storm windows to the Blake House.

Mr. Davis said the Historical Society has restored all the old windows in the Blake House and want to protect that work.  They propose to use good quality light aluminum Harvey storm windows using a contractor who has worked on historic buildings in the past. The windows are combination storm and screen, are painted white, and breaks between plain panes will line up with the existing windows so muntins can be seen through the glass.

Mr. Davis showed the Commission pictures of the windows in the Harvey catalogue.  He added that he would prefer not to add storm windows but the trade off is protecting the huge investment in time and money to restore the existing windows.  He noted that most of the homes around the Common have storm windows like these.

Fitzwilliam mentioned that adding storm windows was not an irreversible process.

Guild moved, McHugh seconded and the Commissioners approved the application to put storm windows on the Blake House as presented.

Mr. Davis said a screen door will be placed in the entry vestibule, where is will not be seen from the street.  He also told the Commission that two of the three chimneys will be replaced in kind this fall.  They will be replaced from the roof up, including the flashing.  Bluestone capstones will replace the capstones on all three chimneys.  The brickwork at the top of the existing chimneys is different, but when the two chimneys are replaced the brickwork will match the third chimney.

The Commission reviewed and made decisions about the guidelines and photographs for the Design Guidelines pamphlet in preparation for the public hearing on September 27, 2007.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 PM.
