Recreation Committee News
March 10, 2010
Present: Julie, Bill, Bruce, Terri, Christi, Gene
- Summer Recreation – Jen Skelton came to meeting to confirm interest in returning as program director and to discuss returning staff members. All but one counselor indicated intentions of returning. Committee and Jen agreed no need to advertise in Sentinel. Will post available position in May Fitzwilliam newsletter. All staff members are up for recertification for CPR/First Aid. Julie will contact Nancy Carney to be sure class is scheduled. Jen indicated there is much confusion with money and permission slips on field trip days. Committee agreed this could/should be handled at the beginning of the program with registration. Field trip costs were added to the registration fees (no change from previous year) so total due is $100 instead of $75. $25 increase is the same amount for previous year’s field trip costs. Jen
also requested a specialized training be provided for the staff for handling difficult children. Including those with, but not limited to, emotional and/or physical disabilities. Julie will follow up with school and look for other resources for this type of training.
- Recreation Funds - . The committee reviewed with Julie the variety of funds that are available to the recreation department as well as how the accounts work. The recreation revolving account handles all funds coming in and being paid out to recreation programs. (this does not include the summer program). Recreation programs such as soccer, basketball, yoga, etc. are all self funding. The Friends of Fitzwilliam Recreation group is no longer in existence but there is still an account with TD Bank with remaining funds from this group. The committee has decided to donate these funds to the recreation department. These funds will be used for new community programs to be offered by the Recreation Department. There are also donations that have been made to the recreation department. These funds can be used
for recreation events and/or programs.
- Ball Field Trust – The funds that were to be used for the ball fields project were transferred to a trust account to be used by the recreation department for the betterment of the recreation areas. Discussion began on some maintenance and improvements that will need to be made at the pole barn. This issue will be continued at the next committee meeting.
- New Programs/Ideas – Adult basketball began in March with open gym at Emerson for both Men and Women. Julie reported there was a nice turnout for both. This program will continue through May and hopefully start up again in Fall. There was a huge response from the men wanting more nights as well as possibly broken down by age. Other program ideas discussed – for teens – dodgeball? Flag Football? Committee discussed availability of volunteers to facilitate programs. Discussion for senior programs was put on hold for the next meeting.
- Open Items – There were no additional open items.
