APPROVED
Historic District Commission
Meeting Minutes
February 9, 2006
Members attending: Terpstra, Fitzwilliam, Fletcher, Guild, O’Brien, Walling and Clukey, Selectmen’s representative. Terpstra called the meeting to order at 4:05 PM.
Public Hearing: Jean Camden regarding installation of a bay window on property located at 47 Templeton Turnpike, Map 11, Lot 43, Residential and Historic Districts.
Ms. Camden apologized, saying it was an oversight on her part that the paperwork for the window wasn’t done in a timely fashion.
Commission members reviewed photos of the front of the residence showing construction on the new porch, which members agreed looked like it belonged there. Ms. Camden indicated the position of the planned bay window. She has ordered the bay window, which is a double hung wood window with a 30 degree angle of bay. The window will be floor to ceiling and is 81 X 60 inches. It will have a trim on top and wooden panels from below the window to the floor, as is traditional for this type of window. Kerry Gagne is doing the work.
Both Fitzwilliam and Terpstra expressed reluctance to approve a bay window. Members agreed and wondered if there was another solution. Ms. Camden noted that the area chosen for the bay is the only place it can go, given interior constraints of a chimney and closet. Members agreed that a single window would not be balanced or be more in keeping with the period.
Members questioned the period of the home. It is late 1860s and Terpstra suggested that was a period in transition from post and beam Federal to Victorian. Ms. Camden said she didn’t think a bay was out of line for an 1863 home. Walling said the home from the same period two doors down also has a bay window.
Ms. Camden also plans to remove the trim from the original front door and stoop and put in a small porch that will mirror the new porch. She added that landscaping the front will soften the look too.
Terpstra moved, Guild seconded and the Commission approved the proposed bay window for this 1863 home.
Minutes: Fitzwilliam moved, Guild seconded and the Commission approved the minutes of the November 10, 2005 meeting as written.
Preliminary consultation: Fitzwilliam brought in a photo and fabric sample for Carol Langer who wants to place an awning over her front door to prevent water damage. Members reviewed the concept and they agreed they didn’t like it as presented. Fitzwilliam will let Ms. Langer know.
Terms of Office: Terms of office for both Terpstra and Fitzwilliam are up in March. Terpstra will not seek office again as he will be moving out of the area. Fitzwilliam will seek another appointment. Members suggested that Brian Luddy would be a good commission member and Fitzwilliam will approach him with the suggestion.
The Commission adjourned at 4:45 PM.
